What is it about the basket?
The basket is more than a container. Just saying the word makes me think of picnics, Easter, crafts, gifts and country style. I also think of Longaberger. If you haven’t heard of Longaberger, then you probably didn’t grow up in the mid-west. You may also not know that each Longaberger basket is handmade and the basket maker signs the bottom of each basket. Another fun factoid is that the Longaberger headquarters building is a gigantic basket! The reason I know these fun facts (and it’s not because I cheated and read their website) is because my mom and her friends hosted Longaberger parties in their homes and marveled at these handmade beauties. They make baskets for every occasion and to carry almost anything you can think of. Need a desk organizer complete with a pen holder? There’s a basket for that. Need a rustic magazine rack? Yup, there’s a basket for that too.
Basket companies today may be creating new baskets for modern use, but they have been part of our history since ancient times. Baskets were used by ancient civilizations daily for transporting goods, for storage and even as molds for making pottery. Some cultures even used baskets to bury the dead. We don’t quite use baskets in all the same ways as our ancestors did. Today baskets are part of our lives in a more casual way. We use them as decoration in our homes and more importantly for giving gifts. Baskets have become a symbol of celebration, of thanks and of joy when we fill them with gifts for our loved ones. These woven wonders have withstood the test of time and are definitely here to stay.

Thank you for posting this. As a consultant with Longaberger, I appreciate it when someone writes a small blurp about the company.
My blog is http://triciabskts.blogspot.com. Again, thanks a lot.
