If the Gift Basket Came to Dinner
I decided to have a little fun with my post for today. What if a gift basket could be personified? Let’s pretend a gift basket, Mr. Gift Basket in fact, came to your house for dinner. What sort of guest would he be and what goodies will he bring? Let’s find out!
Mr. Gift Basket adorned in his cellophane coat and big bow hat is a happy fellow; he always brings cheer to those he visits upon. Today he has brought us a trio of wines from California to toast our good health. A cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay to pair with any main course. Of course, that’s not all. He also brought us many snacks to enjoy even before our feast begins. Sea salt and olive oil crackers perfect for dipping into the asiago cheese spread or even the garlic and herb cheese dip! Those crackers are also perfect little edible plates for the summer sausage and little dab of stone ground mustard Mr. Gift Basket so thoughtfully included. Mr. Gift Basket has not forgotten those with a sweet tooth either. For them he brought amaretti cookies, chocolate covered pretzels, white chocolate and raspberry shortbread cookies and last but not least those melt in your mouth Ghirardelli chocolate squares. Mr Gift Basket never disappoints and he sure knows how to be the life of the party. He carries a bounty of food and drink sure to bring smiles on those who partake.
Evolution of Gift Baskets
Gift baskets, we give them get them and we love them. I’m not sure if it’s the basket or the gifts inside that make this such an ideal gift. Gift baskets are a great modern day gift, but their history is a long one. Baskets date back to ancient times. In fact, certain historical events perhaps paved the way for the modern practice of giving gift baskets. In ancient Egypt, Moses was saved by his mother from certain death. She placed him in a basket hid him among the bulrushes and reeds in the Nile. He was found and raised by the Pharaoh's daughter. This gave rise to stories of babies in baskets found at doorsteps or delivered in a basket by a stork that we see in fairy tales. Bassinets used today are often referred to as the “Moses” basket; they serve to keep babies safe snug and warm. The Moses basket also makes a great starting point for putting together a gift basket for a baby shower.
The ancient counterparts to our modern baskets had a more utilitarian function to gather foods and transport goods. Even though baskets today are not a necessity for us, they still serve the same function. Baskets, with their warm earthy tones, serve to gather an array of gifts to present to friends and family. From ancient beginnings to modern traditions gift baskets are bountiful gifts that show our loved ones on their Birthday, Anniversary, a Holiday or any happy occasion how much we care.
